Summary: Our client is a top ranked mining company with operations worldwide. Well placed in the buoyant Australian Coal market, they are seeking a highly qualified, experienced and driven individual to take up this key strategic role on their senior management team. Reporting directly to the CEO, this person will ensure that the company advances to the next level of excellence and productivity across all of their underground Longwall operations.

The COO – Longwall Innovation & Development will be responsible for, but not limited to the following:

  • Build, maintain and lead a team of world-class Longwall technical experts to define and design a blueprint for a best in class Longwall mine system, both current and future
  • Outline the business improvement pathway for their current underground mines to reach target productivity
  • Identify opportunities to optimize across a network of mines
  • Set the agenda for underground technology strategy, development and adoption. Ensuring standardization of technology and practices for all underground operations company wide
  • Prioritize technology investment, and oversee testing and selection of best-in-class mature core and support technology for adoption on-site
  • Conceptualize customized technology to suit the company’s Longwall operations and develop such technology to an operational stage
  • Collaborate with academic and technology partners to research new cutting-edge technology
  • Be an effective leader and team member by demonstrating a commitment to safety and positive working behavior
  • Identify areas for staff development and provide ongoing coaching and performance feedback

Qualifications/Experience etc:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) or equivalent
  • MBA or recognized commercial qualification would be an advantage

 

  • Experience working at Senior Management (Executive) level
  • Minimum of 10 years Longwall operating experience at a mine site (management/senior management level)
  • A strong commercial focus; preferably with experience in business strategy and/or business development roles
  • Program design and management – Ideally in a multi-year transformational type project, involving lean, six-sigma or other business improvement methodology if possible
  • A track record of building, developing and leading teams
  • Demonstrated experience leading a team of professionals to deliver against set targets
